North Fork of the American River: Pickering Bar Trail
Yesterday I joined Ron Gould for a hike on the Pickering Bar Trail, near Gold Run. From the Gold Run exit on I-80, south side, we drove west on Magra Road and then almost immediately turned south on Garrett Road, which parallels the Diggings for a mile and some before reaching the rim of the North ForkNorth Fork of the American River: Spring in the Royal Gorge,Bluff Camp is over two hundred feet below the level of the North Fork American River Trail (which is sometimes called the American River Trail). It is a good-sized flat forested with Canyon Live Oaks, about thirty feet above river level, interesting in that it is not a glacial outwash terrace, but a bedrock terrace, called a strath terrace.California Gold Panning & Gold Prospecting,Auburn State Recreation Area: Includes 40 miles of the north and middle forks of the American River.
